The Level 5 Specialist Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship can help experienced teaching assistants build their specialist skills in certain focus areas.

  • Level 5

  • 21 Months

  • Up to 100% Funded

The Level 5 Specialist Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship is designed to build the specialist knowledge, skills, and behaviours to support children and young people with diverse needs across educational settings. If you are ready to take the next step in your teaching career and empower the lives of young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), offer emotional wellbeing support, or focus on a specific curriculum area, this apprenticeship is for you.

With a focus on progression into more specialist teaching roles, this apprenticeship will help learners to develop expertise in inclusive practice, mentoring, and curriculum delivery. Over a 21-month period, individuals will learn through a combination of face-to-face and online training and support; a minimum of six hours per week must be dedicated to off-the-job training. During this time, learners are expected to dedicate time to learning and improving skills, knowledge, and behaviours through online teaching, digital learning resources, one-to-one tuition, and workplace assessment.

The Level 5 Specialist Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship offers learners the opportunity to specialise in one of the following: SEND Specialist Teaching Assistant, Social and Emotional Wellbeing Specialist TA, or Curriculum Provision Specialist Teaching Assistant. Learning will be assessed by an independent assessor in an end-point assessment (EPA), which typically involves an observation with questions and a professional discussion underpinned by a portfolio of evidence.

To undertake this training programme, learners must have been a UK, EEA, or EU resident for at least the past three years. Additionally, if you are aged between 16 and 18 and do not have a Level 2 qualification or equivalent (GCSE grade 4/C) in Maths and English, you will be required to work towards these qualifications as part of your apprenticeship. For those aged 19 and above, completing Maths and English (Functional Skills) is optional rather than mandatory to complete your apprenticeship; however, this needs to be discussed and agreed upon with your employer.
