Meet Callum – a learner of The Childcare Company

We caught up with Callum to find out what his UK childcare apprenticeship experience was like, and the ways in which it is transforming his career for the better.

About Callum and his role in Residential Care

Hi Callum! Tell everyone a little bit about yourself.

My name’s Callum Hirst, and I’m a Residential Care Worker at Laska Care. Before I did my Level 4 Children, Young People and Families Practitioner – Residential Care apprenticeship, I worked in summer camps, and spent some time in sales. Later, I moved into agency work with children, which is what made me realise that this was the career path I wanted to follow.

Why he chose a childcare apprenticeship

What made you choose this particular programme?

I chose this course because I wanted to change my career and do something I would enjoy. I always knew I wanted to work with children, and once I started agency work, I realised this was the right job for me. I was specifically looking for a career progression childcare apprenticeship. Plus, I’d heard about the benefits of apprenticeships for care providers as well, so this apprenticeship felt like the best way to build my skills and support my employer too.

Which moments or highlights of the apprenticeship stood out for you?

One of the biggest highlights was how well the programme was set up. It was simple, clear, and easy to follow. My Development Coach understood my learning needs, and supported me with my modules, deadlines, and any questions I had. She was always available, and all the staff were friendly and easy to talk to, which really helped to calm my nerves.

Overcoming challenges during the programme

Did you face any challenges during the programme? If so, how did you overcome them?

I have dyslexia, but my Development Coach knew how to support me, which made a huge difference. I also didn’t have a laptop at home, so I had to complete my work at my workplace. At times, it felt difficult and I worried I was falling behind, but I was encouraged and supported throughout, and I’m proud that I managed to complete the programme.

Looking back now that you’ve finished, how do you feel the apprenticeship has helped you either in your job, confidence, or personal development?

Finishing this residential care apprenticeship has been one of the biggest achievements in my career. It looks great on my CV, and will support me with my upcoming promotion. I have learned a lot about different situations and how to handle them. I also feel much more confident in my role.

Skills gained and day-to-day impact

Which skills or parts of the course do you notice yourself using the most in your day-to-day work?

I use the different theories from the course every day in the workplace, especially the Pyramid Model. It helps me support young people in reaching their full potential. I also feel more confident. I’ve taken on more responsibilities, and improved my communication and people skills.

Career progression after the apprenticeship

What has changed for you since completing the course?

I’ve also progressed in my job! I’ve moved into a new role, and I’m earning more as a direct result of completing the course. My employer has noticed a change in me too.

That’s incredible! From your perspective, how do you think your organisation has benefited from you completing the apprenticeship?

My employer now has a qualified member of staff who understands both the theory and the practical side of the job. I am more skilled, and able to support the team effectively, which has had a positive impact on the young people we work with.

What would you say to someone thinking about starting this apprenticeship? Any advice?

I would recommend this apprenticeship to anyone. It helps you progress in the company and is great to have on your CV. The support is strong, and the programme can really help you grow in your career.

Finally, how would you sum up your apprenticeship experience in a nutshell?

I feel fantastic after completing this apprenticeship. I achieved top marks, and the happiness I feel is hard to put into words. This experience has truly boosted my confidence and given me a strong start for the next step in my career.
