A milestone for your team

The End-Point Assessment (EPA) is the final stage of every apprenticeship in England. It’s where your apprentice demonstrates they meet the standards of their role, independently assessed, fairly graded, and nationally recognised.

For you, it’s proof that your investment has created a competent and confident professional who can make a difference in your team.

The flow of the EPA

Here’s what to expect as your apprentice moves through the process:

  1. Completion of training
The apprentice completes their programme, achieving all requirements including their portfolio, Functional Skills (if needed), and off-the-job training hours.
  2. Internal verification
Their portfolio and evidence are checked internally and certified where necessary. This ensures quality and compliance before Gateway.
  3. Gateway and registration
You, the apprentice, and the training provider agree readiness. Evidence is submitted, and the EPAO registers the apprentice and allocates an assessor.
  4. Assessment planning
A planning meeting takes place with the assessor, you, and the training provider. The assessment schedule is agreed, and any evidence submissions are confirmed.
  5. Assessment delivery
The apprentice completes their assessments – which may include a presentation, project, professional discussion, or knowledge test – to demonstrate competence.
  6. Results and certification
The EPAO grades the assessment (Fail, Pass, Merit, or Distinction). If successful, the official certificate is issued and sent to you. Resits are available where needed.

How you can support

  • Choose the EPAO early: Make sure they are approved for the apprenticeship standard.
  • Champion preparation: Provide time, resources and encouragement for revision and practice.
Request additional support from the Delivery Coach if required.
  • Engage at gateway: Confirm readiness only when the apprentice is fully prepared.
  • Protect wellbeing: Reduce unnecessary workload near assessment and support confidence.

Why the End-Point Assessment matters

  • Confirms your apprentice meets national care sector standards
  • Strengthens your organisation’s credibility and quality
  • Adds a motivated, fully trained professional to your team
  • Builds loyalty and pride through recognition and celebration

At The Childcare Company, we believe the EPA is more than the end of an apprenticeship. It’s the beginning of a stronger workforce, shaped by people who are ready to care with skill and confidence.
