How Charlie built confidence and achieved a distinction: a childcare apprenticeship success story

A crisis of confidence abolished by The Childcare Company

When Charlie Ryder embarked on his early years apprenticeship journey, he didn’t have the highest level of confidence. Despite working at a Residential Care Worker at Keys Group Woodhouse Farm, and his employers believing in him, he still didn’t fully believe in himself. He knew this was something he would need to overcome if he was going to successfully complete his training, and benefit from apprenticeship career progression.

Even with this hesitance, he successfully navigated his programme with grit and determination, committing himself to working hard and emerging triumphant.

Join The Childcare Company as we celebrate Charlie’s apprenticeship experience, and the success it has brought in his career.

The challenge facing the learner

At the point of enrolment, Charlie felt a little hesitant. He didn’t fully believe in his capabilities. He frequently put himself down. He really didn’t think he would complete his Level 4 Children, Young People and Families Practitioner – Residential childcare apprenticeship.

Still, something inside whispered to him. Buried deep inside was an instinct telling him to give it a shot. Despite his doubts, he went ahead, enrolled, and got started on his course.

Building confidence through apprenticeship support

As Charlie’s apprenticeship programme progressed, he could see signs of his own confidence beginning to grow. It was in the seemingly little things, like competing a task independently after thinking he didn’t understand how to do it; and answering questions correctly despite convincing himself he didn’t know the answers. Apprenticeship confidence building means chipping away at it a little at a time, collecting small wins that add up across the course duration. Over time, these small victories amounted to a substantial feeling of accomplishment.

Charlie received ongoing encouragement and support from his Development Coach, Liana Perfect. Like her namesake suggests, she was the perfect pairing with Charlie, providing personalised apprenticeship support. She helped him work on his self-belief throughout the apprenticeship, cheering him on at every turn, and reassuring him that he could do everything he thought he couldn’t – and more.

Charlie’s employers at Keys Group also worked with Liana to bolster Charlie’s confidence. His Line Manager attended regular review sessions, and ensured that his work aligned with the modules he was studying, as well as providing activities that would count towards his off-the-job training.

The positive impact of apprenticeship training

As Charlie’s course continued, his view of himself began to change. Suddenly, he was recognising just how much he’d accomplished that, at the start of his journey, he’d been reluctant to attempt.

His skills and potential were no surprise to anyone but himself. His employers and his Development Coach saw Charlie’s potential from the very beginning.

Still, he’d had to see his own competence unfold before he would believe what he was capable of. Now, he was seeing evidence of his abilities reflected in his course work.

Achieving success: completing the apprenticeship

Soon, Charlie’s End-Point Assessment (EPA) was almost upon him. He began to get nervous. He knew he had come a long way from those early days, when he was riddled with uncertainty and fear. However, there was still a shadow of doubt hanging over him. Despite this, he began preparation for his final project and presentation.

As Charlie waited for confirmation of his results, his palms were sweating. Had he managed to scrape a pass? Would it all prove worth the hard work and perseverance?

The answer was a resounding ‘yes’.

Not only had Charlie passed hisLevel 4 Children, Young People and Families Practitioner – Residential programme, he had completed it with a Distinction – the highest level an apprentice can achieve!

He couldn’t believe it. Through consistent effort and refusing to give up even when he wanted to, Charlie had exceeded his own expectations.

Career progression and workplace impact

This achievement had a significant impact on Charlie’s demeanour at work, and his confidence levels. He found himself walking a little taller, feeling proud of himself, and more certain that he was good at his job – something everyone around him knew all along.

Since completing his apprenticeship, Charlie has applied for a more senior role at Keys Group, which is something he wouldn’t have even dreamed of doing before.

How apprenticeships benefit employers

Charlie now offers the support and encouragement he received from others to his colleagues, knowing what a little boost in confidence can do for an early years professional who can’t fully see their own value for themselves.

This is the beauty of the UK childcare apprenticeship experience. As well as building the individual’s skills and knowledge, it also bolsters businesses and strengthens the early years workforce as a whole.

The Childcare Company’s coach-led approach ensures:

  • Better staff capability
  • Positive outcomes for young people
  • A more confident workforce
  • Improved retention rates
  • Increased levels of morale

For employers, this demonstrates how apprenticeship training directly improves staff performance, reduces turnover, and positively impacts outcomes for children and families.

The young people Charlie works with have shared how proud they are of him, often saying that his success has inspired them to believe in themselves more. The Childcare Company is proud of him too.
