How Scott’s apprenticeship shored up his future: a childcare apprenticeship success story
From requirement to opportunity
The Childcare Company knows that sometimes, during an early years career, decisions are made for professionals. There may be prerequisites to accepting a role, such as mandatory training mandates.
The thing we’ve seen more often than not however, is that required training ends up being so rewarding for individuals. Take Scott Smith, for example. His apprenticeship was a requirement of his employer. However, he can carry the value he’s gained from it forward into his future career for the rest of his working life, using the skills he has acquired to move onwards and upwards in the early years sector.
Our team caught up with Scott to talk about his UK early years apprenticeship experience, how it has helped him, and his vision for a successful future.
The challenge: turning mandatory training into a lifelong opportunity
Hi Scott! Great to catch up with you. Tell everyone a little bit about yourself.
Okay! I’m Scott Smith. I work in the early Years sector as a Team Leader. I did the Level 4 Children, Young People and Families – Residential Pathway apprenticeship.
Where were you in your career before starting the apprenticeship?
I spent six years working within the prison service, gaining extensive experience in a challenging and fast-paced environment.
What made you choose this course with The Childcare Company?
I first undertook this apprenticeship programme because it was a requirement set by my employer. However, I soon realised that it offered valuable opportunities for personal and professional growth, which supported my long-term career development goals.
Apprenticeship experience and highlights
What stood out for you as a highlight of your apprenticeship experience?
A major highlight of the apprenticeship was the flexibility and support I received from my Development Coach. They were always willing to work around my schedule. I felt reassured knowing I could contact them whenever I needed guidance. This made the learning process smooth and positive.
Were there any challenges you needed to overcome during the programme?
Thankfully, I didn’t face any significant challenges during the programme. The support provided, along with the structure of the course, made it straightforward and manageable.
Apprenticeship reflection and impact
Looking back over your learning journey, how do you feel the apprenticeship has helped you as an early years professional?
The apprenticeship has helped me in every area of my role. My confidence has grown significantly, and the knowledge and skills I gained on my residential care career path have directly supported my career progression. Plus, I’ve experienced real childcare apprenticeship career progression. Since completing the programme, I have been promoted and have moved into two new roles – developments I attribute to the qualification and the learning experience it provided.
Which of your new skills do you notice yourself using the most in your day-to-day work?
The skill I use most is reflection. The course taught me the importance of reviewing my practice and identifying areas for improvement. This is something we now discuss more openly within the team, and it has enhanced how we work together.
How has your apprenticeship transformed you for the better?
I’ve moved into a higher-paid role, which has been a really positive change in my life. I feel more confident in my new responsibilities and in general. My people skills have definitely improved. My employer has commented on the change they’ve seen in me, which is really encouraging.
How apprenticeships benefit employers
In what ways would you say your organisation has benefited from you completing the apprenticeship?
From my perspective, my employer has gained peace of mind knowing that I now have a strong and up-to-date understanding of my role. Completing the apprenticeship has also shown that I am reliable, committed, and able to carry out my responsibilities with confidence and professionalism.
Apprenticeship advice and reflection
What advice would you give to someone thinking about starting an apprenticeship?
If someone is thinking about starting this apprenticeship, I would encourage them to go for it. You absolutely can do it, and it is definitely worth the time and effort. The knowledge and confidence you gain really do make a difference.
How would you sum up your apprenticeship experience overall?
My experience has been very positive. I found that the course linked closely to my practical work. It helped me understand my role more deeply and strengthened my confidence. I feel proud of what I have achieved. The apprenticeship has supported my progression in ways I didn’t expect.
