Early years training FAQs
An early years course teaches the knowledge and practical skills needed to support children from birth to age five. You will learn about child development, safeguarding, play-based learning, and communication. These courses combine theory with hands-on experience, helping learners build confidence while giving employers assurance that staff are well-prepared to nurture and educate young children effectively.
An early years course is a great way to start or progress a career working with children. It helps learners gain recognised qualifications and real-world experience, while employers benefit from skilled, knowledgeable staff. Whether you are passionate about supporting development or looking to upskill your team, an early years course builds confidence, competence, and career opportunities in a rewarding sector.
- Level 2 qualification is equivalent to GCSEs
- Level 3 to A-levels
- Level 4 to a higher national certificate (HNC)
- Level 5 to a foundation degree
- Level 6 to a bachelor’s degree.
Each level supports progression, helping learners advance their knowledge and responsibilities, while employers can align roles with the appropriate qualification level.
Costs can vary depending on the course and provider, but many early years apprenticeships are fully funded through government schemes, making them a cost-effective option for both learners and employers. Diplomas may have fees, though funding or payment plans are often available. Employers may also be eligible for funding support, reducing overall training costs.
Completing a qualification can open doors to roles such as nursery practitioner, teaching assistant, room leader, or early years educator. With further experience or study, progression to management roles, specialist support positions, or even teaching is possible. For employers, it means developing a skilled workforce ready to grow within the organisation.
